24.04 Carat Canary Yellow pear shaped diamond- and Marilyn Monroe sounds like a recipe for something spicy, and it is. The Moon of Baroda diamond was originally owned by the Marharajas of Baroda in India- the royal family of Gaekwad. The rumor goes that if the diamond crosses the sea it would bring bad luck to it's owners, and unfortunately it seems that the lore stands correct.
In the mid 1700's the diamond made it's way to the Emperess of Austria- the mother of Marie Antoinette (who we already spoke about) After her death it was returned to the Gaekwad family. Some beleive that the Emperess met her demise beacause the diamond had crossed the sea.
It was mostly dormant till it was sold in 1943 by Meyer Rosenbaum of Detroit (traveling over the Atlantic Sea) He later gave the bauble to Marilyn Monroe, who wore it for the song Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend and also in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. This exposure made the diamond famous, but that same year her personal life began to take a downward spiral that ended tragically as we all know.
The Moon was sold in 1990 amd 2018 both times to anonymous buyers- so we don't know the fate of it's current owner.
